I am a Business teacher at a rural Government Secondary. I decided to pursue the M.ed Reading because there are many students in my school who I have contact with who are unable to read or have difficulty reading. I am hoping that this programme will enable me to help students like these to become proficient readers so that they would be able enjoy the pleasure and world of knowledge that is available through reading

I think the entire country needs this programme because even in the workplace there is functional illiteracy among other types of literacy. i got an experience of my life recently. there is a student who was transferred to my school in form two. i was asked by other teachers who teach him to assist him with the reading to my surprise simple three letter words he did not know but he is going to Mexico to play football for a well known team.
ReplyDeleteI also had the privilege of talking to the mother of the assistant coach of the team and was told that none of those boys could read other people had to help them fill out their forms. So there is a need for reading specialist not only in the schools but trust me the entire country
Marcia, I read your concise blog and want to tell you that not only rural schools are suffering. Dr Gumbs asked for an opinion on motivation for joining the MEd Reading program. I remember the words of a song that the Infants sing , "Love is like a golden penny", you have to spend it, lend it, give it away and you'll end up getting more. I hope that I can lend and give away much of what we learn during my time in this course to help my educational system.
